AISD OUTPERFORMS STATE ON A 

MAJORITY OF TESTS

Comparisons show AISD students outperform their peers around the 
state in a majority of STAAR exams in third through eighth grades. 
Math and science remain strong areas for the district. Those are some 
of the more notable takeaways from the 2016 accountability ratings, 
which serve as the state’s report card for public schools. 

The ratings report reveals Amarillo ISD and 54 of its 55 campuses 
met the state’s standard on academic performance, while also meet-
ing the target in 216 out of 219 total categories evaluated by Texas 
Education Agency (TEA.)

In October, Amarillo ISD successfully appealed the TEA accountability 
rating of “improvement required” for North Heights Alternative School, 
which had missed the category of student achievement by one point.

Meanwhile, San Jacinto Elementary and South Lawn Elementary 
are among 400 Texas schools lauded for having ‘Met Standard’ and 
earning all possible distinctions in 2016. Distinctions are based on 
achievement and performance indicators among 40 peer campuses 
of similar type, size and demographic.

“We are proud to see these reports of academic progress across our 
district,” said Dr. Dana West, AISD Superintendent. “While we know 
tests are not the sole measure of performance for a student, a school 
or a district, they are an important part of what we do. The scores 
show we’re a step closer to our ultimate goal, which is to prepare 
every student for success.” 

The District’s graduation rate remains high at 89.3 percent.
