early November construction crews and machinery

descended on the campus of Fannin Middle School

and the fi rst of projects funded by Amarillo ISD’s

School Bond 2017 commenced. Students and staff

welcomed the workers as the newest members of the

Fannin family, though no one realized just how warmly until the weeks leading up to Th

 anksgiving, when the relocation

of a particular class to the cafeteria led to an accidental lesson in serving others.

To accommodate construction, Alisha Davis’ class moved to the cafeteria one aft ernoon, right aft er the last lunch. Staff

hadn’t yet had an opportunity to clean. Without any prompting from her, Alisha’s students went to work taking items to
the trash and wiping down tables. Th

e next day was a repeat. One thing led to another and Alisha found herself discussing

with her students all the diff erent jobs, particularly those in the service industry, which go unnoticed.

Determined to make it known that they do notice the hard work others put in, Alisha’s class asked if they could write

thank-you notes to people in their school. “I told them we would reserve one day to write thank-you notes,” says Alisha.
“When they began writing, they didn’t want to stop.”
